In the heady days of the nineties and early noughties, the profession has suffered a shortage. As the giant has grown with improvements in technology and logistics, recruitment could not keep up. The Health Service as a public entity, its employees have their pay subject to the whims of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Nurses have been recruited from abroad, arriving from all over Europe and the Far East.
For a law to new jobs, hospital managers also consider it necessary to locums. Hourly rates of pay in this sector has reached the incredible sums mind.
Being a large organization, the health service will inevitably fall under the places of the lawyers for compensation. This, coupled with better technology always requires that a new generation of nurses is required.
It has been suggested in government circles that new recruits should be considered only if in possession of a degree. This idea seems shortsighted. Recent history has shown that we are short of recruits. It would also be a significant obstacle for a person who left school early and wakes up one morning and decide this is their vocation.
